What made you become Vegan/Plant-Based?

Great question! I started working as a Chemical buyer for a pharmaceutical manufacturing company at a lab. We sold our items to doctors and we also had items we sold directly to retail stores like Wal-Mart, Target, etc.

I worked with our team of scientists sourcing new chemicals (also called raw materials) for our pharmaceutical products. During this time, I learned a lot about how these chemicals are not only used in the pharmaceutical industry but also the food industry alike.

I remember meeting with several chemical sales representatives who openly vocalized how the meat and dairy industry are their biggest customers!! That is right, the meat and dairy industry buys more chemicals than pharmaceutical manufacturing companies.

What’s even scarier than that fact? The chemicals used in our pharma products to kill bacteria/fungus/viruses are the SAME chemicals used to create β€œfood-like” products. After learning about all of this, it totally changed how I viewed food. I slowly transitioned to a fully plant-based diet after a period of about six-nine months. Now, I’ve been vegan for five years.

What benefits do you see/feel since becoming Vegan?

Too many to list! The benefits are seriously limitless. You are what you eat is not just a saying, it is a scientific fact. I’m a bit of a chemistry nerd, and when you break things down to a cellular level, you really can measure just how much this statement is true. There is a difference between food and food-like products.

I feel like I have much more energy, sleep better, improved digestion, smoother skin, healthy teeth/gums, better mood, weight loss, reduced pain from previous injuries. I rarely wear makeup and now enjoy long distance running.

The biggest benefit is how I view the world and all living beings in it. I feel closer to everyone, closer to nature, and closer to the source that connects us all.

Are there plenty of Vegan food options where you live?

Thankfully, there are many vegan options here in Los Angeles. There are plenty of vegan restaurants like Crossroads, Monte’s Burger, Nic’s on Beverly, Sage Plant Based Bistro, and so many more that are strictly vegan. I’m happy to see more restaurants offering plant-based options.

The best way to discover vegan dishes is looking at foods that have been around for over 100 years. If a food existed back then, it is most likely vegan friendly!

Are any of your friends or family Vegan?

One of my childhood friends has been vegan for nearly fifteen years. Another friend has been vegan for over ten years. I have plenty of vegan friends, but I am the only vegan in my entire family.

Is there anything you don’t like about being Vegan?

Honestly nope! I do not see one downside to being plant based. Yes, it may be difficult to eat out sometimes but are you missing out? Not really, it's about the memories being created. Also, trust me your true friends will have fun exploring veganism with you. Tons of non-vegan friends often send photos of vegan foods they find at grocery stores or tell me about their interest in doing β€œmeatless Mondays”. Who knows, you may even inspire others to go vegan too!

What is your favourite Vegan meal/food?

My ultimate favourite vegan food is Cauliflower! The best way to make it is creating a delicious Crispy Orange Cauliflower dish with sweet and sour sauce yum! I also LOVE my sweets!! Vegan cookies and cakes are always super delicious!

Is there any Vegan food you dislike?

I do not like most vegan cheezes. The best I’ve found is Daiya’s White Cheddar style Mac and Cheeze.

Have you got any top tips for anyone who may be starting a plant-based/vegan lifestyle?

The best tip is to just start! It’s not an overnight process and that’s okay. The best things in life take time but are always worth it. Get educated and learn more about your body. Learn about different foods and have fun with your cooking!

Your final thoughts?

This year I founded Sweet Sparkles Bakery. It’s a fully vegan baking company named after my late fourteen-year-old puppy, who was named Sparkles. She was with me for half of my life, and I honour her daily by serving up vegan sweet treats to make you SPARKLE!
